A retail project where materials determined construction. Based on a winning student design, Icon and SJB FKA Architects worked hand-in-hand to achieve their vision. The finish, of Rimex Stainless Steel panels, posed enormous challenges. They had to be air freighted from England to meet tight deadlines. A 3D computer model had to be created to generate steel shop drawings and minimise construction problems, with each panel requiring individual site measurement before it could be manufactured. On top of that, the cantilevered platform required external cladding to be erected from the water, on barges. Little wonder the completed building received a commercial architecture award from the RAIA.
